Judd Foundation

Manhattan, New York + Marfa, Texas

HQ’s collaboration with the Judd Foundation began with the restoration of the artist’s former New York home and studio located at 101 Spring Street. The success of this restoration led to a partnership with the Foundation as it embarked on various projects in Marfa, Texas.

101 Spring Street, New York

HQ served as historic preservation consultant to Judd Foundation for the restoration of 101 Spring Street. This cast-iron building at the corner of Spring and Mercer Streets in SoHo was designed by Nicholas Whyte and constructed in 1870. It served as artist Donald Judd’s home and studio and was where Judd first developed the concept of permanent installation. The project restored both the building’s original architecture and Judd’s design interventions and installation, and for the first time made the building accessible to the public. HQ guided the project through local Landmarks Preservation Commission and historic preservation tax credit reviews.Subsequently, HQ has worked with the Judd Foundation to secure Texas state historic tax credits for the rehabilitation of a number of buildings in Marfa, Texas associated with Donald Judd’s work there.
